Wow! We have had a huge increase in interest for the Growl. I'm so pleased! Most people have heard about us through other Growlers, or just stumbling upon us by accident. I get at least one email a week from people interested in joining. This is amazing!

Just think how many emails I would be getting if everyone were putting up flyers and promoting like Two Guys with Faces For Radio and Weapons of Mass Distraction. If you've been promoting and I didn't mention you, well, that means I haven't seen your promotion. And chances are if I haven't seen it, others haven't either, since I'm looking for it.

Even without campus promotion though, your shows are being listened to and our fan base is increasing, and there are no complaints about that. Keep up the great work, and I'm sure we'll see bigger and better changes in the future!

Podcasting

I learned two interesting things at the IBS conference.

1. Because of political hassles, an LPFM license is going to be a long time coming.
2. MSU is looking pretty good in the streaming department compared to many other schools.

So, for now, let's focus on our strengths and assets.

One change I'd like to see us make ASAP: Podcasting!

I'll offer details at the next meeting.

Thanks to SOFAC, Missouri/New York relations may finally be pushed over the edge. Ben, Jon, and Kevin are going to Manhattan to attend the 65th annual Intercollegiate Broadcasting System's national conference. I'm sure it will be a valuable and educational experience for all of them. And I'm sure they will enjoy the bar immensely.

New Music for the Growl

Hey there,

Thought everyone would like to know that our first issue of CMJ (College Music Journal monthly) has arrived full of news, reviews, and interviews, bringing with it a CD full of new artists and new music from established artists for our perusal and streaming enjoyment. Please, listen to it, write down which tracks are the best, rip it, edit it, get it on the air! Do whatever! Read the magazine too. Its great.

What you are not allowed to do:
DO NOT REMOVE FROM THE STUDIO. This costs us money, and neither the CD or the magazine is yours. You may read it as you wish, you may quote it on the air (giving credit where credit is due) but don't take it out of the room!

I have also donated two other magazines for the studio, Under the Radar and AMP (American Music Press). These are not to be removed either.

These are for the benefit of all the DJs, so don't mark out pages or deface the magazines. One person's trash is another's treasure.

Free Americana Single: "Inauguration Day"
Stockbridge, VT, January 19, 2005 - Americana singer-songwriter Bow Thayer has release a free single from his forthcoming solo CD, "The Driftwood Periodicals, Volume 2," via internet download. The song commemorates the United States Presidential Inauguration Day, January 20, 2005 by registering dissent for the war in Iraq and other Bush administration policies. Fans and broadcasters are encouraged to freely acquire and share the song.

Crooked Root Records, which will release Thayer's second "Driftwood" CD later this year, has made the single "Inauguration Day" available for free download from their web site and from Thayer's artist page at SoundClick.com.

Songs on the first Driftwood CD were inspired by country life in the Green Mountains. Volume 2 will maintain the feel of the original, but will include more social and political themes. If the songs dealing with pressing issues, Thayer is not particularly concerned about sales. "I just want as many people as possible to hear these songs," he says. Crooked Root Records co-owner Stephen Farrington agrees, "Expression is the heartbeat of a free society; we're proud to be giving this song away."

If you know of a show or event that you want everyone to know about, post it here and talk about it on your show. Talk about the blog and the post on your show too! Use it for communicating with your listeners. Think outside the box!

Bitter the Clown is the most awesome human on the planet

Well, humanoid, I think the jury may still be out on the species debate.

But, once again, Bitter has made the station run smoothly and has gone above and beyond the call of duty. Fans of his across the country praise his technical skill and promotional talent, and the ladies of the night praise...well, they like him too.

Bitter's sports authority is nothing to be taken lightly either. Although not a participant, his latent volleyball talent is so obvious and glaring that we have put him in charge of all things volleyball. His ball handling skills are like no other on the Growl.

Thank [insert deity/higher power here] for Bitter the Clown! :-)

Christmastime at the Studio

Thanksgiving is the red-headed stepchild of the holidays. After Halloween decorations are slashed to 50%, they bring out the Christmas trees and as an afterthought they bring out turkeys.

So, in an effort to be American, I say skip Thanksgiving and go right to Christmas! Decorate the studio! Cut out snowflakes and tape them to the window! Drape garland around the mike stands! Bring us a Christmas card! Make a snowman outside the window! Get creative! As long as it doesn't interfere with normal operation of the studio (i.e. the board, encoder, computer, CD players, mikes, door, or chair wheels), its fine!

The Growl should have a party. Complete with egg nog and secret santas and mistletoe and morning self-loathing.

BTW, you need to check out All Music Guide's new look and feel. I wouldn't recommend it for dial-up users, but on broadband you have to check out the spider looking thing in the top banner. It lets you explore music by theme and istruments, as well as the normal things. If you are looking for a resource for themed shows, this is it.

An email was recently sent to you asking that someone RSVP to attend one of the meetings, but we have not heard from you. The last scheduled meeting is November 15. I'm Blog-tastic!

So, in compliance with my contractual duties, I am posting to this blog. Everyone reading this (Growlers, Non-Growlers, Etc.) should be planning their lives around Bitter The Clown's Happy Fun-Time Show, which airs 8:00-10:00 PM on Wednesday nights. Where else can your hear the new commercial for Das Uberburger or recieve a "Girls Of Multiple Sclerosis" calendar? Where else can you hear music by KMFDM, Die Warzau, Celldweller, Android Lust, Coil, Voltaire, Pig, ohGr, and other strangely-named acts? Nowhere, that's where.

I'd like to publically thank Daniel and Eric for chalking the sidewalks last Friday. I know it's a pain in the ass, but it's the easiest and cheapest way for us to promote ourselves to the campus community. Well, we could just run up to people and scream, "Listen to The Growl!" in their faces, but I'm not sure that would be good for our vocal cords.

Anyone who wants to learn how to engineer volleyball games is welcome to stop by the studio around 6:00 PM on Tuesday the sixteenth. I'll be there, ready and willing to educate.

Also, there are a number of flyers in "Jon's Promo Box of Stupendous Fun and Whimsical Delights." I would not be dissapointed to find out that other Growlers were making promos in their spare time. Not a requirement, just a suggestion. A strong suggestion. A suggestion that will insinuate itself into your brain and lay there, festering and seething until you are driven mad by the desire to make promos. Mad, I tell you!
